California has flourished as an economic and agricultural powerhouse thanks to the progressive engineering of a complex maze of waterways that zigzag throughout the state. This intricate network of vital infrastructure carries water to urban areas as well as to farmlands, and nowhere has there been greater agricultural development than within the Westlands Water District service area.

Westlands receives water from two sources, the federal Central Valley Project and groundwater. The District, in turn, provides water service to over 700 family-owned farms that produce an average of $4.5 billion in goods and services each year. However, a number of ever-looming conditions continue to threaten or cutoff these supplies. If this were to happen, the devastating economic, environmental, and social effects would be felt around the world.
