10 Tips for Detecting Sneaky Leaks Around Your Home
In honor of the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Fix a Leak Week, now is the perfect time to check your home for hidden water leaks. Many household leaks can go unnoticed, which can lead to higher water bills or even costly repairs. Taking a few minutes to look at the warning signs can help catch small issues early, protect your home, and reduce your household’s overall water use. The following tips offer simple ways to detect sneaky leaks around your home and take action before they become bigger problems.
1. Listen for Leaks
Some leaks can be heard! A soft hissing or dripping sound can indicate a hidden leak.
2. Peek Under Appliances
Bulky appliances can easily hide leaks. Check beneath your dishwasher, fridge, and water heater for hidden drips or pooling.
3. Look for Puddles
If it hasn’t rained and you see water pooling outdoors, it could be due to broken sprinklers or a broken water line.
4. Check Your Water Meter
Turn off all indoor and outdoor water, then check your water meter. If the leak indicator dial is moving, you may have a leak.
5. Inspect Walls
Look around your home. Discolored or flaking paint can be an indicator that leaks are hiding behind the drywall.
6. Test the Toilet for Leaks
Add food coloring to the tank. If color appears in the bowl after 10 minutes without flushing, the flapper may be leaking. Watch the video on how to replace your flapper.
7. Secure Shower Heads
Check shower heads for dripping or excess moisture. One drip per second can waste up to 3,000 gallons of water annually! Watch the video on how to replace your shower head.
8. Survey Fixtures and Pipes
Frequently check under kitchen, laundry, and bathroom sinks for moisture and around tubs, toilets, and showers for puddles.
9. Check Your Spigots
Ensure all outdoor faucets and hoses work properly without dripping, spraying, or excess moisture.
10. Use a Flow Monitor Device (Rebate Available!)
Monitor your home’s water use 24/7 and receive instant leak alerts on your smartphone or tablet.
