The Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires all governmental agencies have disaster preparedness plans to help ensure the safety of its citizens in the event of an emergency, and to qualify for future funding should a disaster occur. With the help of a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, 20 local service providers have developed the Orange County Regional Water and Wastewater Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan.
These 20 agencies sponsored two workshops in September 2006 to gather input and suggestions from the public. The workshops included the results of risk analyses for disasters specific to Orange County, including earthquakes, fires, floods, landslides and liquefaction. There were also discussions on manmade hazards. Click here to view the PowerPoint presentation.
A working draft of the Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan was available for review with comments and questions being directed to Kelly Hubbard, Program Manager, Water Emergency Response Organization of Orange County, at (714) 593-5010 or khubbard@mwdoc.com.
The final plan was approved by the respective city councils and boards of directors of the participating service providers, and implemented as part of the comprehensive Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000.
